PAWA’s Pumpkin Painting Palooza and Plein Air Magazine contest

"The Pumpkin Patch" Suyematsu Farm , 10x20 plein air painting by Robin Weiss

Recently our Prestigious Pres, Karen Bakke came up with an idea for PAWA artists to get out and paint the fall color by having a contest for the best pumpkin painting. She was able to get Plein Air Magazine to hop on board with three, one year subscriptions to our favorite magazine as the top three winning awards. Pretty cool!

If you have the opportunity to participate in promotional contests and events like this don't be a procrastinator like me! Be like member Brooke Borcherding who joined a group of us at Suyematsu Farm on Bainbridge Island. She did an amazing 24x30 painting on location, submitted her work right away and was one of the winners!

After  painting we met at Bainbridge winery and had our lunch...with wine of course,..at an outside picnic table. A really nice way to get out of the studio! if you live on the Kitsap Peninsula or don't mind getting on the ferry to Bainbridge, a group of PAWA painters and friends usually paint somewhere on the island every week, weather permitting. Contact Nora Masters for more info.

Another winner was Mami Shimomura who joined the Pop-Up paintout at the Baily Farm in Snohomish county along with other PAWA members.

These days you can join a pop-up paintout in person or virtually!  Sometimes using Google Street View.  Member, Jenny Kinberg stayed home and practiced painting orange.....Successfully, as you can see here! She was the third winner and can now look forward to getting Plein Air Magazine for a whole year! Congrats Jenny!  She talks about her submission:

Hi! I hope I’m not too late on the pumpkin painting challenge, I love plein air magazine, it’s by far my favorite art magazine!
I bought a little tiny pumpkin (I don’t have an oven so can’t make pie out of it, so no point in getting a big one) and put it outside on a table this morning, on top of a tarp. I need practice with orange, it’s not a color I use very often. Recently I did a plein air painting while camping in our orange tent, it was super hard. So today I brought out every cad red and yellow I have and gave it a shot. In the end I am happy with the color. Painting is 5x5 oil.

While I didn't get my submission in time for the contest, I have been painting a lot of pumpkin paintings both on location and in the studio. Below is a 11x14 studio painting from photo reference taken on location at Suyematsu Farm on Bainbridge Island.  I sure hope you can get out and get some inspiration by joining a pop-up paintout in person or on line!  Check out the Plein Air Washington Painters website for more info!

Stay safe and stay creative!
