Plein Air Watercolor Kit

Download PDF for printing

Travel anywhere with this simple kit. Use it as a journal and paint wherever it strikes your fancy. Paint on planes, trains, restaurants, and even en plein air!

  • 5” x 8” Moleskin Watercolor Paper
  • Quart Sized Freezer Bag containing:
  • Windsor & Newton Professional Compact Set (or Student grade set) I set up the palette with the same colors I use in oils. When a pan of paint is empty, I refill it with watercolor from a tube and let it dry.
  • 1 oz. plastic bottle with plastic cap
  • Pure Sable Brush, Size #4 (Optional)
  • Mechanical Pencil, extra lead and erasers
  • Viva Paper Towels – cut into smaller rectangles

When I know my travels will take me to a place where there won’t be enough time to set up my oils often enough to warrant carrying them along, I bring this kit instead. As a matter of fact, it is always in the small backpack I carry everywhere. I do use it to paint en plein air, but even more frequently I paint on airplanes, trains, restaurants, and sometimes even in cars; it passes the time very quickly. I use a small piece of paper towel to wipe my brush clean, and when I need to change the water in the small water dish, I just blot it out with my most recently used paper towel. If I’m looking for an image to paint from, I look through the photos on my phone; there is always an inspiration there!
