Byline: Charlie Sharpe facilitator/host for our PAWA MT Baker paintout.
People came from Washington, BC, and as far as Southern California and we had a great time painting the fall colors and the mountains.
The huckleberries were ripe and plentiful. Baker is amazing in that there are beautiful scenes wherever you look. Move a few feet and the scene changes and begs to be painted. While it is true that the weather can be iffy this time of year, the payoff is that when the sun does come out the scenery is extraordinary.
We did get the fair weather and a lot of good work got done. The meals put on by the Mountaineers are really quite good and the camaraderie is great as well.
I like to say that Baker is all about the snow, and Shuksan is all about the show, and it showed well this year. The entire area from the ski area, up to the visitor center and beyond to Artist Point is truly unique in that there are vast and spectacular views of mountains all around as well as fascinating vignettes of trees, ponds, rocks, and ridges everywhere you look.
This is just one of a series of picturesque locations that PAWA selects as meeting places for their paint outs. The only way to get the emails and calendar is to join PAWA and get on board for some great painting trips.
I am hoping to take advantage of their trips more this year, because there is always a local member that can speak to the best spots to paint in the area.
